The smoke wasn't very assertive in theirs either; once I knew it was smoked I could pick it out, but when drinking it blind (it was simply listed as Dunkelweiss on our chalkboard, and server didn't mention it), the smoke kind of got muddled up with the phenols and it ended up tasting like a really green dunkelweiss.
